STAGE DOOR CONSERVATORY
Offers four popular summer camp programs in musical theater and the performing arts to children in the 3rd through graduating 12th grade. Based in Berkeley, our programs are in close proximity to Albany, Richmond, Oakland, Piedmont, Alameda and other East Bay and Contra Costa communities. Acclaimed artistically, our day camps provide an enriched, supportive and often profoundly memorable experience for children interested in developing and expressing themselves as young actors and theater artists.

"If I Were a Rich Man" may be one of the most recognizable songs of all time. The hit tune of the classic musical Fiddler on the Roof, inspired by 19th century Yiddish tales, has been sung in 15 different languages, including Hindi and Japanese.

In the last 50 years Fiddler on the Roof has toured in countless productions around the world, travelled to more than 30 countries and once set a record as the longest-running Broadway show with 3,242 performances. That's a lot of "Ya ha daidle deedle dums," and "Bidi bidi boms."

And that's just half of it. Gwen Stefani incorporated samples of the words and rhythms from that iconic song in her own 2004 blockbuster version, produced by rapper Dr. Dre, "If I Were a Rich Girl," after a more obscure reggae version of the song a decade before. Who would have guessed that so many of Fiddler's songs would enter our popular, contemporary musical lexicon?

If you've never seen Fiddler you can still visit and experience the fictional village of Anatevka in 19th century Tsarist Russia on MAY 18 at STAGE DOOR CONSERVATORY's Fiddler on the Roof screening and sing-a-long, and if you are a fan, as so many of us are, you can visit again, just by joining us for our special evening.

Our special event is being held to celebrate our upcoming 13th summer season, which will include a full presentation of Fiddler on the Roof by ON BROADWAY, our annual performing arts intensive beginning June 24 in Berkeley for young actors entering grades 5 - 9.

Fiddler on the Roof is based on Tevye the Milkman and Other Tales by Sholem Aleichem. Set in the little village of Anatevka, Tevya (played memorably by the beloved Israeli actor, Topol) yearns for a better life for his family as they struggle with poverty, the persecution of the Tsarist regime and the impending threat of loss of their historic home and traditions.

Join in as Tevye contemplates the importance of "Tradition" and sings to "Life."

Winner of three Academy Awards, Fiddler on the Roof has won the hearts of millions with its humor and warmth. The plays universal themes cross barriers of race, class, nationality and religion. Its celebrated score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick is widely known not only by theater fans but by music lovers throughout the world.

The production was nominated for ten Tony Awards, winning nine, including Best Musical and inspired four Broadway revivals, a successful 1971 film adaptation and wide international acclaim.

Please join us for an evening of singing as we join Tevya, Golde and their five daughters on a musical exploration of their lives.

Tickets are $9 for children ages 12 and under and $18 for other attendees.

We'll open the doors of The Church at 1501 Walnut Street at 7:00 PM and begin our screening at 7:30. Come early and enjoy some delicious treats and some music by our alumni and other members of our community.

Our event is a fundraiser for our 2013 "Arts Access for All" Scholarship Program, a program that offers tuition discounts to children from financially stressed families so they can attend our summer programs.

These programs begin June 24 and run through August 16 for children entering grades 2 - 12.
